Polygraph Accuracy
One of the most misunderstood issues about the polygraph is its accuracy. While the instruments themselves are uniformly very accurate, the accuracy of decisions of truthfulness and deception varies by application. Some methods have proven to be highly accurate, but have fewer settings where they can be used. Other methods are applicable in a broad range of settings, but have a lower accuracy. Because the question of accuracy is inextricably tied to application, the answers lie in the three principal applications: single-issue testing, multiple-issue screening, and recognition tests. Each of these is addressed individually in the links to the left.
