Breathing
The polygraph records breathing with two sensors that go around the body, one about the chest and the other about the abdomen. The mechanics of breathing changes the diameter of the torso, changes that are detected by the sensors. A reaction indicating deception is seen as a change in the pattern of inhalation and exhalation. In the diagram below, the change at B is commonly observed when a person is lying.
