Motion
For the polygraph to be effective, the examinee must cooperate with the process. Sometimes guilty persons try to manipulate the polygraph by moving parts of their bodies in hopes that it will throw the examiner off. In recent years new sensors have been devised that detect these concealed movements, making it more difficult to succeed in defeating the polygraph. Some sensors are pads that are placed on a chair, and other sensors are built into the chairs themselves. The diagram below shows the signal from the standard polygraph motion detector, and what it looks like when an examinee tries to beat the test by moving his feet.
