Domestic Testing
On occasion married or committed couples will seek the services of a polygraph examiner to help resolve suspicions one or both of the partners have toward the other regarding an issue. Some polygraph examiners may place prerequisites on the couple, such as insisting that they first seek professional marital counseling. Other examiners may not impose such a requirement, and still others do not conduct domestic testing at all. The test topics for the examination depend upon the wishes of the client, but most frequently they revolve around the issue of sexual behavior. If one chooses to pursue domestic testing, it is important to try to restrict the number of test questions to the fewest possible. Each new topic added to the list will incrementally decrease the accuracy of the results. If the issue can be resolved with a single question, the results will be higher than if several questions are posed. Domestic testing tends to be expensive, and in some cases the client has been deeply disappointed in the test results, both favorable and unfavorable results. Those who are considering domestic testing would be wise to consult a relationship professional beforehand to help clarify what the purpose and effect of the polygraph examination should be.
