Heart Conditions
Q. I have a heart condition. How will this affect my polygraph examination?
A. Most polygraph examiners will not examine anyone with a heart condition unless a doctor has provided a written statement that the examinee’s condition will not be adversely affected by a polygraph examination. A general exception to this rule is the common heart arrhythmia (irregular heart beat), of which many people have and who can be tested successfully. Medications, including beta blockers, will not affect the examination. However, if the examinee is taking blood thinners, it is important to advise the examiner. In rare cases blood thinners have been known to cause small hemorrhages under the skin below the blood pressure cuff.
