Facial Analysis
Research over the last two decades has suggested that short-duration facial expressions can reveal concealed emotions, and have implications for the detection of lies. Called micro-expressions, they correspond with emotions that the individual is attempting to mask. A series of small studies point to an accuracy above 80% for detection of deception. Interpretation of facial expressions has typically relied on a painstaking frame-by-frame analysis of video recordings by a specially trained expert, however there are laboratories working on automation of the analyses. Once automated, facial analysis may prove useful during free-flowing conversations such as interviews by police, customs agents, and airport checkpoints.
